APPI Journals Online SUBSCRIBER HELP & SERVICES:
Frequently Asked Questions
about Member Subscriptions

  1. Will I receive a password? May I share my password with friends, or is use limited solely to me?

Yes, when you complete the subscription process, you will receive a user name and a password. You are the only one licensed to use this password.

  2. What if I forget my password?

We have instructions for what to do if you forget your user name or your password. Details about how to do this will be included as part of the subscription process.

  3. Why should I get a subscription to the American Psychiatric Online Library (APOL)?

    Member Subscribers have access to:
Tables of contents, abstracts, full text searching, full text display, document delivery, PDFs, links to Medline and GenBank, future tables of contents, interjournal links to other HighWire Press journals, and the advantage of having password access to APOL Online from any computer connected to the Internet. The list of journals includes: The American Journal of Psychiatry, Psychiatric Services, Psychiatric News, Academic Psychiatry, The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, The Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences, and Psychosomatics.

  5. How can I tell if my institution has subscribed? How do I get my institution to subscribe?

If your institution has a paper subscription, it will be eligible to have an electronic version of the journal as well. In so doing, you will automatically have access to the tables of contents, abstracts, full-text searching, full text display, PDFs, Medline and GenBank links, and future tables of contents. You'll also see a button at the top of the page confirming you're signed in as part of an institution.

If your institution does not have a paper subscription, it cannot get an electronic version of APPI Journals. If you would like to have an institutional subscription, please contact your local librarian.

  6. Will I still be able to get the paper version? And for how long?

Yes, individuals and institutions will continue to be able to receive the paper version for the foreseeable future. At some time, the paper and electronic versions may be available as separate subscriptions.

  7. Who is eligible for a Member Subscription?

APA Members are eligible for Member Subscriptions to The American Journal of Psychiatry and Psychiatric News, providing them with a paper and electronic version of the journal. Members may also have access to APPI Journals Online through an Institutional Subscription. Institutional Subscriptions are somewhat more limited than Member Subscriptions. The special member services are not available to non-member subscribers, and full-text access from off of the institution's network (e.g. home access) is not available. APA Members are the only individuals who can receive an electronic only subscription to APPI Journals Online.

  8. How can I access the APPI Journals Online if I am not a member to one of the above organizations and I don't have access through an institutional subscription?

You may wish to apply for APA membership or one of the above memberships to obtain a specific journal, or you may wish to purchase an Individual (Non-Member) print subscription which provides access to the electronic version. Without a subscription you have access to Tables of contents, abstracts, and full text searching (without full text viewing) at no cost and without having to register.

  9. How do I become a member of the APA?

Information about APA Membership and application forms are available from the APPI.
