The practice of psychiatry cannot be fully understood unless one is acquainted with the trends and traditions of the society in which this art is exercised.
Without forsaking the notion that the psychiatrist influences the society in which he lives, I have stressed that general social factors of a socio-geographical region are reflected on the psychiatric scene. In the Deep South, tradition, economic patterns, caste-class divisions, poverty and migration are related to the structure and staffing of psychiatric institutions and to the varieties of psychopathology and treatment.
